Weekly Wrap-Up: December 10

Thank you for your generous donations to the food bank! So far, Room 20 students have brought in 71 items! Wow!! Amazing!


Our Learning This Week:

  • We finished representing numbers up to 20! Ask your child to show you! 
  • We discussed 2D shapes, how we could sort them, learned the new word "vertice" and played dice roll addition games with partners! We also made 2D Shape pizzas!
  • We made our own 1-100 number lines and then circled the 2s to 20, 5s to 100 and 10s to 100! 
  • In Social, students started to create their own dream community maps, complete with 10+ landmarks, green spaces and more! Be on the look out for more information in January about when we start building a community! 
  • Students continue to experiment with beginning story writing and using different sentence starters 
  • We had an amazing Virtual Assembly with Earth Rangers! You can download the app for free and use the code "LYNX" for 25 points and the code "BELUGA" for a free shirt for your avatar! 
  • In Art, we created an oil pastel winter sunrise art piece!

 Weekly Wrap-Up: November 29 - December 3

Wow! Welcome to December! Time is just flying by! 

Reminders:

  • Please ensure students have winter boots and all winter gear with them everyday for the winter season.  
  • Please ensure students bring at least 2 clean masks with them each day.
  • Fun Lunch Orders due soon
  • Virtual Assembly with Earth Rangers next week on Dec 9!
  • Donations to the Calgary Food Bank can be brought in at any time! We have a friendly challenge set up between the Grade 1 classes to see which class can bring in the most non-perishable food items! 

We Are Learning About...

Science
  • Animal Senses and Changes during Autumn and Fall 
English Language Arts 
  • Walking Stories about ourselves - I am strong when..., I can show respect when...
  • Winter Story Prompts - can you use the sight word of the week "SNOW" to create a story? 
Math 
  • Representing numbers, addition facts to 10, using a number line and manipulatives to solve addition problems, number bonds and number facts to 18 
  • Practice skip counting by 2s to 20, 5s to 100 and 10s to 100 
  • Doubles practice (1 + 1 = 2 all the way to 10 + 10 = 20) 
Social
  • Final review of rights and responsibilities before we move into our community landmark project! Stay tuned for details!

  • Book Fair - Wednesday morning - check it out, Thursday morning, bring money to purchase books
  • Food Drive - we are collecting non-perishable food for the Food Bank.  You can send in donations at any time!

 Friday Wrap Up 

Reminders:

  • Please book a parent-teacher conference if you have not already.  There are several openings on Friday morning.  
  • Fun Lunch - November 24
  • No School Friday November 26 due to Parent-Teacher Conferences 
  • Hip-Hop Residency - look for video link to be sent out shortly from the school 

We had a special zoom meeting story time with a host from CBC Kids, Tony!  - We played a funny game and read us "Paddington the Magician" 

English Language Arts

  • Focus on explicit practice and learning of weekly sight words 
  • Picture prompts and sentence starters anchor chart - we are going to be starting simple story writing 

Math 

  • Representing double digit numbers multiple ways
  • Open-ended word problems 
  • Addition with sums up to 10, bridging into sums up to 20 

Science

  • Review of our five senses
  • Introduction to animal senses and how animals change their appearance/prepare for seasonal changes

Social 

  • Rights and Responsibilities - introduction - what are my rights as a child? What are my responsibilities

  • Hip Hop Residency this week - wear casual clothes on Friday for special videotaping! 
  • On Wednesday, we will have a virtual Zoom meeting with a host from CBC Kids, Janaye! She will read us a story!

 Friday Wrap Up - November 5

Hello Families! What a wonderful week! I hope you have a fabulous weekend! See you Monday boys and girls! 

Reminders:

  • We only have school Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday next week 
  • Parent-Teacher Conferences will be November 25/26 - booking information coming soon 
  • Label if possible all hats/gloves/outdoor gear with your child's name in case they are misplaced or left outside 
  • Please ensure you send at least two (2) fresh clean masks in your childs backpack each day. 
  • Homework - will be posted this weekend and due to the upcoming short school week, it will be due the following Friday, November 19. 

This Week... We Are Learning About...

  • Zones of Regulation - green, red, blue, yellow - ask me about this ! My goal is to be in the green zone during classroom learning time! Yellow zone is a great zone for gym and recess! 
  • Math
    • patterning, extending a pattern, making our own pattern with 2-4 elements, what is a pattern core, number bonds for 6, 7, 8
    • Solving beginner addition word problems 
    • Skip counting by 5s and 10s 
  • Social
    • What groups do I belong to? (cultural, religious, extra-curricular/sports, family, etc)
    • Where is my family from? 
  • English Language Arts 
    • Practicing writing and reading our weekly sight words 
    • Engaging in Literacy Centers
    • Using picture prompts to write at least 3 sentences independently.
